BUILDingHealth and Equity in East Portland was implemented in a historically under-served area with low levels of educational attainment and high rates of poverty. Population growth has outpaced the development of food access, and affordable housing, resulting in health inequities and social disparities. These barriers to health have resulted in high rates of chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, asthma, and obesity. In East Portland, BUILD targeted the cycle of toxic stress, reduced chronic disease and its causes, promoted health equity, and reduced disparities. The partnership connected governmental, community, and business stakeholders to invest in the infrastructure of East Portland.

Impact

Ultimately, this project created infrastructure for improved health by hiring two Community Health Workers – who have helped about 100 community members connect to health care and social services. The project has also trained more than 30 diverse community members to become medical interpreters and provided 3 scholarships to low income students to pursue careers in the health care industry.
