Chandler Park Healthy Neighborhood Strategy focuses on zip code 48213, located on the east side of Detroit, Michigan. The neighborhood faces extreme divestment and there is a lack of access to transportation, education, and food. Many either lack health insurance or are covered by Medicaid. The Eastside Community Network has enhanced both the social and urban infrastructure in the area. During the implementation years, the collaborative network launched the “Healthy Neighborhood Strategy” initiative and accelerated recent efforts to restore the areas around the park –clustering education, recreation, conservation, and green infrastructure around a community gathering space to improve safety, make it easier for residents to stay active, and rebuild a cohesive neighborhood.

Impact

 

The impacts from the initiative include: over 100 residents engaged in health and nutrition education and physical activities; residents lost weight and reduced/eliminated taking medication to manage their diabetes or high blood pressure; increased park utilization; and helped restore the park’s reputation as a safe place for family fun. On a community level, the project built relationships and connections among neighbors and changed perceptions around healthy foods.
