BUILD Stories: Leveraging Relationships to Strengthen Rural Health in Payette, ID

Over the last three years, BUILD awardees have been building community power and changing systems to create healthier neighborhoods. This story features the Payette County Health Action Team in Payette, ID.

Click to read.

Payette County Health Action Team (PCHAT) is a community collaborative in rural Idaho that engages residents to develop solutions to address housing needs. Through the collaborative, partners engaged with local residents to gather input on needs and priorities.

From that data process, PCHAT identified housing and mental health as critical issues in Payette, and are leveraging cross-sector partnerships to blend funding to increase access to homes, as well as establish and co-locate healthcare with affordable housing.

Over the past three years, the collaborative has:

  • Received annual HUD funding to become southwestern Idaho’s access point provider to focus on housing the unhoused;
  • Secured a land donation to host a future clinic and affordable housing units;
  • Championed zoning changes with the mayor’s office;
  • And created a blueprint for a new building that blends affordable housing and accessible healthcare.

“ Each partner brought distinct strengths: trusted community relationships, lived experience, policy influence, implementation capacity, and data-driven health insights.”
