The BUILD Health Challenge® (BUILD) model rests on five principles foundational for collective impact — being Bold, Upstream, Integrated, Local, and Data-Driven.
Since 2015, 68 awarded communities have been recognized by BUILD for their embodiment of the BUILD model and their collaborative, community-centered approach to improving health. During that decade of practice and implementation, BUILD learned from participants – who were themselves learning from the community – how the BUILD principles work in practice and, over time, naturally evolved to make the work more effective, sustainable, and equitable.
Ten years of iteration and evaluation have shown that the B-U-I-L-D principles support sustainable change by balancing fidelity to the model and responsiveness to community needs. Together, the principles provide a flexible framework that allows community health practitioners and community members to take into account the diversity of contexts in which the work takes place and design a uniquely local approach to improving health in their neighborhoods – and around the country.
