In 2015, a group of partners in Cleveland, OH came together to address unsafe housing conditions and related health outcomes, including a lead poisoning crisis among children in their neighborhoods. Later, the Cleveland team expanded their efforts to build a new healthy housing data system, making important information about housing available to physicians, public health officials, and the residents of those neighborhoods.

“They trust me, I trust them, and I’m proud of that because that’s the glue that keeps us moving forward. We can do a lot with that trust at the core. We can do anything.”

In 2019, as the Lead Safe Cleveland Coalition was taking off and new lead-safe policies were being enacted, a local neighborhood was facing a new challenge: the loss of their only grocery store. Building on their knowledge of partnership and systems change, and anchored by community residents, the Central Kinsman Wellness Collective is creating a new, sustainable, and locally-owned food system.
