In 2021, BUILD launched a Listening Tour, asking current and past BUILD awardees for their insight into BUILD. What the Listening Tour generated multiplied across the initiative and catalyzed an organizational shift from not only expecting that community collaboratives center community voice, to holding BUILD to the same expectation and standard.
In a recent issue of The Foundation Review, the Johnson Center’s peer-reviewed journal of philanthropy, BUILD’s Executive Director Melissa Monbouquette and co-author Jessica Mulcahy of Success Measures explore how BUILD built on a learning culture to develop a listening practice over time and ultimately move from listening to action, intentionally embedding community voice into its strategy, operations, and culture.
The article, available in Open Access, shares an overview of the resulting transformative changes that occurred in the last five years, as well as enabling factors, best practices, strategic recommendations, and lessons learned from BUILD’s journey.
