Increasing Access to Behavioral Health Screening and Support in Aurora (IABHSSA) targeted three zip codes in Aurora, Colorado that experience significant socio-economic disparities. Children living in these zip codes face many complex challenges that contribute to poor health outcomes. IABHSSA worked to ensure that the medical homes and other direct service sites are better equipped to provide developmental, psychosocial, and maternal well-being screenings. When needs were identified, this project connected families to a rich network of both clinical and community-based resources to address their needs. IABHSSA’s action plan included a “whole family approach” to identify barriers and solutions to behavioral health; policy and program research to understand solutions to inequities; and integration of clinical and behavioral services to wrap around families and promote health from birth.

“Changed the WIC system for the entire state of Colorado to begin asking families about their child’s well child visit adherence to ensure children are receiving primary care on schedule and paved the way for other community based Community Health Worker (CHW) programs from Children’s Hospital CO in Aurora Public Schools”

 

Impact

The project successfully placed CHWs from Children’s Hospital CO in the local WIC office, connected families with high needs to resources, provided educations classes on how to store and prepare food purchased on WIC dollars. These efforts increased the children engaged in primary care, strengthened the Community Health Worker model, and improved the impact of WIC dollars on food security and nutrition.
